The Youth Concerto Competition exists for the purpose of 1) providing talented young musicians an opportunity to audition before and receive critical feedback from professional musicians, 2) providing exceptionally talented young musicians an opportunity to perform as soloist with a nationally recognized symphony orchestra and 3) furthering the overall musical development of talented young musicians from the Central New York region.

The Youth Concerto Competition divides instruments into four categories: Piano, Strings (violin, viola, cello, and double bass), Winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone and tuba), and Other (timpani, percussion, harp and guitar).

Up to three contestants from each of the four categories may be chosen to go to the final round of auditions. The preliminary round judging criterion for sending a contestant on to the final round is demonstration of the ability to play a solo with an orchestra. The judges are therefore looking for extremely stable and accurate rhythm, excellent intonation, and artistry.

FINALISTS: Those in the final round not chosen as Winners will be awarded Finalist Certificates of Merit.

WINNERS: Performers of extraordinary merit, at the discretion of the judge, may be invited to perform with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Only after having demonstrated musical ability consistent with the high standards associated with a nationally recognized symphony orchestra will an individual be invited by CMM and the SSO to perform as soloist with the orchestra. A panel of judges, including the Syracuse Symphony Music Director, will judge the final round to determine a winner, if any. A winner from each category may be chosen. If the judges are unable to choose a winner from a particular category, they may choose more than one from another category.

THE JUDGES AND COMPETITION COMMITTEE MEMBERS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO NOT SELECT A WINNER.
